Sunscreen Protection Come Rain or Shine

As Baz Luhrmann’s famous song once said, “If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it.”

While many of us wear sunscreen only during the summer months, it’s becoming more widely understood that we should be wearing this wonder product day in – day out – come rain or shine.

Ask any skincare expert or dermatologist and they will tell you that sunscreen is the number one skincare product and should be worn at all times – not just when it’s sunny. Ask any beauty journalist or skin junkie and they will confirm that the most essential step in their skin routine is sunscreen everyday.

Q. So why should we be using sunscreen if it’s not sunny?

“Ultraviolet rays that are the cause of sun damage and skin cancer are always present,” explains Dr. Shilesh Iyer, M.D., a Board Certified dermatologist with the NYDG. “They are indecent of cold or hot weather, and are not blocked by clouds. On overcast days, only visible rays (but not UVB rays) from the sun are blocked. The best way to protect the skin is with skin protection.”

Award-winning and respected facialist, Lisa Franklin agrees, “UV ageing is present 365 days a year with equal intensity during all daylight hours. It is the main cause of photo ageing and can pass through glass and clouds.”

These UV rays account for 95% that reach the earth. They are able to penetrate into the deeper skin layers (dermis) and effect collagen and elastin. In so, causing earlier signs of ageing with skin damage.

Short-term sun damage presents as a sunburn. Long-term, unprotected exposure causes gradual ageing of the skin known as photoaging, and accounts for about 90% of the signs of skin ageing. The two main types of rays are UVB and UVA. They damage skin cells and alter their DNA, leading to fine lines, wrinkles and pigmentation, loss of elasticity and skin cancer (including melanoma) So, the best way to prevent this is, yep, you guessed it…sunscreen.

Gone are the days when sunscreen was oily, would cause skin break outs or make-up to slide off.
